Way Upstream is, in some ways, a
typical Ayckbourn play. On the surface it's a lively and
funny comedy - but there is a darker side too.
Two couples, Keith & June and Alistair & Emma, embark on a river cruise. Right from the start there are tensions. June doesn't really want to be there, as it's 'beneath her', and her husband, Keith, assumes command. It becomes quickly apparent that he knows nothing about boats. Alistair, his business partner, goes along with it all - anything for a quiet non-confrontational life and an easy holiday - but his wife, Emma, is increasingly annoyed with his back-seat approach. She encourages him to be more assertive and not let Keith walk all over him. Things are not helped when word reaches them, via Mrs. Hatfield (this was in the days before mobile phones), that there is a strike at the novelty goods factory that Keith and Alistair own in partnership; tensions begin to rise and tempers fray. Then they run aground! Fortunately, Vince is on hand to rescue them and invites himself on board.... © The Hamble Players Evening performances begin at 7.30pm; doors open at 7 pm
